HAT SIZING 101
Part of getting the right hat is finding the right size + getting the right fit. Our hat experts are here with tips + tricks to help guide you through finding the perfect fit for you to wear your many hats in confidence for a lifetime. Check out the Gigi Pip sizing chart below + then learn how to find the right hat for your face shape.
+ HOW ARE FEDORA HAT SIZES MEASURED?
Hats are measured by the inside circumference at the bottom of the hat's crown (the sweatband) + most often measured in centimeters. This is the case for all Gigi Pip styles including fedoras, boater hats, gamblers + caps, + in both felt + straw. While hats may be sized according to their measurement, it is fairly common for women to choose hat sizes based on the average women's head size (57 cm) + then adjusting down to fit if necessary. Most of our Gigi Pip hats are equipped with an adjustable inner band to ensure a customized fit!
+ WHAT IS THE AVERAGE HAT SIZE FOR WOMEN?
Hat sizes for women are fairly intuitive. However, the average woman's head size measures around 57cm, which is a small/medium as far as Gigi Pip sizing goes. If you are unsure of your hat size then we recommend starting here! The 57cm S/M size can be adjusted down to 55cm XS/S with the adjustable inner band, if necessary. Ballcaps are one size fits most + have an adjustable strap, allowing you to get the perfect fit.
If you already know that you have a slightly larger head than average, we recommend starting with the 59cm M/L size, with the ability to adjust down if needed. The largest size Gigi Pip offers is a 61 cm, labeled as an XL, + like our other sizes the 61 can be sized down to 59cm. For women who feel they have a slightly smaller head than normal, start with the 55cm XS which can be sized down to 53cm. In select styles we offer kids sizing which begins at 53cm + can be adjusted to 51cm.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE
There are two primary methods of measuring your hat size + are based on the style in which you wear your hat. You will need to take both methods of measurements (shown below) + then use the larger of the two measurements to determine your hat size. Once you've received your hat, you can decide how you would like to wear it + adjust your hat size accordingly. (we'll show you how later in this article)
+ TIP: If you don't have a textile measuring tape, use a string or piece of yarn to measure the distance around your head. After you have marked the yarn around your head, lay it out flat on the ground or table + measure the straightened out piece of yarn with a measuring stick or regular measuring tape.
METHOD 1 - THE TRADITIONAL STYLE
This is the traditional style of wearing a hat. The front tip of the hat is low on the forehead, just above your eyebrows, causing the hat to sit nearly level with the ground.
METHOD 2 - THE HALO STYLE
This is the halo method of wearing a hat. The front of your hat is raised up + the hat sits on the back of your head, showing more of the underside to your brim in a halo-like fashion.
HOW TO ADJUST YOUR HAT SIZE
Most Gigi Pip hats are equipped with our beloved adjustable inner band! Simply just flip up the sweatband to find the velcro tab + pull to tighten. Then, velcro the ribbon back in place to secure your desired fit.
Still unsure where to begin? We recommend starting with a size 57cm S/M (average size for women) + trying out the adjustable inner band to get your desired fit. You can adjust your hat up to 5 cm tighter!
HAT SIZING TAPE
Hat sizing tape is an additional option for tightening the fit of your hat. Place the foam tape on the inside of your hat, behind the sweatband, with the sticky side facing towards the hat wall.
Wrap the tape completely around the hat for maximum size decrease or cut tape length in half for a more moderate decrease. Size to fit prior to removing the adhesive cover. Once the fit is correct, remove the adhesive cover, press firmly into place, and wa-lah.
THE BEST HAT FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE
As always, we're here with a friendly reminder that there are absolutely no rules to what hats you can wear in confidence. We have two major beliefs -
1. Comfort is key +
2. Wear whatever makes you feel like a queen!
(don't forget -- we love "rule" breakers.) But, if you're curious + would love to learn more, scroll with us as we break down what hats compliment particular face shapes nicely. Let's start with determining your own face shape first.
There are six basic face shapes - Long, Round, Square, Heart, Oval + Diamond.
To determine your face shape, we recommend focusing on these three attributes of your face -
+ The widest part: Consider where the widest part of your face is. Is it across your cheekbones, your forehead or your jawline? Inspecting this measurement helps to point to a specific face shape easier than looking at your head as a whole.
+ The jawline: Take a good look at the shape of your jawline. This will put you into different face categories depending on if you have a strong jawline or a softer, less noticeable one as well as the shape of your chin itself!
+ The length: This is more of an eyeball-it determination. Look at the length of your face starting from the top of your forehead down to the bottom of your chin + decide whether your face length is long, medium, or on the shorter side.
Now you're ready to learn which hats would technically be most flattering for your face shape! It's possible you'll fall under multiple categories. Here is what we suggest.
LONG FACE SHAPE
An elongated face is longer than it is wide, which is why focusing on the length of your face is key.
Hats with wide brims + medium crowns such as the Emma Wide Brim Fedora, Capri Medium + River Guatemalan Palm are all great options! Choose a hat with a brim that cuts across the forehead to minimize the length of your face.
ROUND FACE SHAPE
Your face is about as wide as it is long, with a wide forehead, full cheeks (that are most likely the widest part of your face), and a rounded chin.
The symmetry in your face is the perfect canvas for floppy hats like Annabella + would be perfect for a Leo. Dahlia, Wes, Miller + Emma are also a few hats you should check out!
HEART FACE SHAPE
Your face is a bit round + a bit square all at the same time. Having a prominent forehead that slims down to a slender jawline + an angled chin qualifies you as having a heart shape face.
Maintain balance of your facial proportions by wearing the slender crown Miller Fedora, the Raine Wide Brim Fedora, + Linen Newsboy Cap!
OVAL FACE SHAPE
If your face is longer than it is wide + your cheek or jaw line are more slender than most you have an oblong Face Shape.
Our Monroe, Wes + Ginger’s brims will balance your facial features. Dahlia + Miller are great choices as well! And make sure you check out our baseball caps like the Jojo for a more casual look.
